About Kari

While I have worn many hats in more than 24 years in the nonprofit sector, I began my staff career as a generalist in a one-person fundraising shop. As a staff leader, board member, interim and consultant, my focus has been on building and sustaining individual giving programs, leading turnarounds and reorganizations, coaching organizational leaders, identifying and transforming systemic challenges, developing fund development professionals and strengthening organizational capacity.

In my eight-plus years at multiple consulting groups and as an independent consultant, I have counseled nonprofit leaders at more than 150 organizations throughout Canada, the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Midwest and Pacific Northwest. Some of the organizations I’ve worked with include YWCA Seattle | King | Snohomish, AFP Advancement Northwest, the American Red Cross, Uganda Fistula Fund for TERREWODE, New Haven Rotary, the U.S. Army Education Scholarship Fund, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound, Social Venture Partners Seattle, ROOTS Young Adult Shelter, EKARI, Puyallup Watershed Initiative, Housing Resources Bainbridge, Third Armored Cavalry Regiment, Canadian Council for the Blind and Benevon.

While I was growing up, I was very fortunate to travel extensively with my family for pleasure and mission; those experiences developed my deep understanding and compassion for the vast diversity in ethnicity, perspectives, cultures, beliefs and backgrounds beyond my own white, privileged upbringing. That has led me to extensive training in racial equity, social justice, power, privilege and institutional racism, which now informs my racial equity work with clients, and in community forums and upstream contexts.

Fun facts about Kari:

  • While on Army active duty just south of the Korean DMZ, I was the sole woman, and a starter, on the base’s football team; we played teams from other military bases around the country.
  • I used to drive autocross as part of SCCA and raced on some CART/Indy (open-wheel series and F1 feeder) tracks during my “career.”
  • In college and grad school, I was a men's league sports official (football, basketball, volleyball, baseball and track and field).
